First showing up in the market in 1966 in the form of the Jeepster Commando, American Motors was determined to create a worthy competitor to Ford and Chevrolet. Interior luxuries were not the only concerns for Jeep, the car ad to be practical as well. By introducing multiple body styles, Jeep did exactly that. The main focus for the 1970 Jeep Commando was to be rigid and rugged for off-roading, the Jeep Commando features smooth panels all around and a lifted suspension to allow for 4x4 clearance. When optioned as a station wagon, a chrome roof rack adds additional storage as well as giving the occupants plenty more room. Chrome is also found on the side mirrors, wheels, bumpers and door handles and hinges. The classic Jeep grill remains at the front with the headlamps appropriately on either side.
Upon entering the cabin of the 1970 Jeep Commando, the interior could be purchased with paint-matched paneling. Shifting is accomplished through a Hurst “Dual Gate” shifter unless ordered with the 3-speed automatic. Leather wrapped seats offer the comfort that Jeep had become known for. Hurst equipment can be found throughout the interior as well as the exterior.
Under the hood sits a 134 cubic inch F134 Hurricane I4 making 75 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque. An available 225 cubic inch Dauntless V6 produces 160 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. Since the engine is naturally aspirated and features two valves per cylinder, this power will accelerate the Jeep Commando to 60 in just 14.8 seconds and will accelerate up to 91 mph.
