Chevrolet Camaro RS
Designed from the outset as a more conventional replacement for the rear-engine Corvair and not a belated General Motors response to Ford’s wildly successful Ford Mustang, Chevrolet’s sporty Camaro debuted in late 1966 and was available with virtually every option and powertrain combination available. Racers quickly adopted the Camaro, and in the hands of Mark Donohue in SCCA Trans-Am competition, drag racer Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins and others, the Camaro’s formidable performance reputation grew to legendary status. On the showroom floor, the Camaro was a successful gamble for Chevrolet, with production for the introductory 1967-model year totalling nearly 221,000 vehicles.
