Is Mercedes-Benz Working on 1,300-HP Hybrid Hypercar?
Since the CLK GTR left the market, there have been inner whispers of a Mercedes-Benz hypercar and what it might entail. The latest news has said hypercar happening in the very near future. The Mercedes-AMG R50 could come as soon as next year with a whopping $2 million price tag. German magazine Autobild says the new hypercar will be out just in time for AMG's 50th anniversary, which happens next year. We can expect Mercedes-AMG to take a number of design cues from the Vision Gran Turismo concept we saw in 2013 (pictured), as well as its current crop of fast two doors; AMG GT, C63 AMG, and a bit of history from the CLK GTR. Performance details about this hypercar are unsurprisingly scarce, but it will probably include two electric motors with 150 horsepower apiece to power the front wheels. In addition, there will be a mid-mounted 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine to give it another 1,000 horsepower for a grand total of 1,300 horsepower. That number is simply ridiculous...but also spectacular.
Engineers will try and keep the weight down with a carbon fiber monocoque to make that 1,300 horsepower all the more thrilling. The R50's design will be inspired not only by its heritage, but also by Le Mans racers. Imagine a very low seating position with wheels and pedals that adjust to fit drivers of any size. Now all you need is $2 million to make it happen.
