This 85-Mile Ford Mustang Cobra R is as Close to 'New' as it Gets

They say hindsight is 20/20, and well… they’re right. Back in 2000, loads of Ford Mustang collectors missed out on scooping up one of the hottest pony cars ever produced—the jaw-dropping Mustang Cobra R Just 300 were ever built, all dressed in a vibrant Performance Red hue, and all packing potent 385 horsepower V8s. And not much else. These were stripped out, track-centric Mustangs to the nth degree, and now the rare coupes have become hugely collectible, especially to those who missed out the first time around. This is one such car, claimed to be number 135 out of that batch of 300, and unbelievably it’s still essentially a brand new car. The Cobra R recently surfaced on eBay with only 84.5 miles on its odometer, plus its window sticker still untouched and plastic still covering its seats. Gasp. When new, these were designed to be the fastest Mustangs ever built, capable of launching to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, dashing through the quarter mile in 13.2 seconds, and clocking a top speed of just over 170 mph. The motor tasked to achieve that was a tuned-up version of Ford’s 32-valve 5.4-liter V8, which now came mated exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox. Also included in the Cobra’s $24,000 “R” package were Recaro seats, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 21 gallon fuel cell, racing shocks and springs, a side-pipe exhaust, plus an upgraded radiator, oil cooler, fuel pump, and brakes. Ford also took a few standard Mustang bits away, including air-conditioning, the radio and speakers, as well as the rear seats. Expectedly, all that performance came at a price—around $54,995. A big ask in its day for a Mustang. RELATED: Here's What the 2020 Ford Mustang Could Look Like

Today it asks a bit more, a steep $79,995; then again, given the rarity of Cobra R’s and this car’s claimed 84.8 miles traveled… perhaps it’s not such a tall order after all. RELATED: Meet the 800-HP Shelby GT500 "CR" Ford Mustang
