This ’68 Chrysler Art Car Gets Plenty of Smiles Per Hour

Over the years, there have been plenty of lovely and highly celebrated art cars—everything from scads of famed BMWs to Janis Joplin’s psychedelic painted Porsche—but as far as automotive painting canvases go… you probably can’t find a better art car donor than a big, American full-size car.  Think about it. In the ‘60s and ‘70s they were vast, slab-sided American land yachts—essentially rolling billboards for those with a knack for brushes and pigments. And it would appear one such artist gave this ‘60s land yacht quite the art car makeover. Look beyond the speckled multi-color paint job and peering eyes and you’ll find a 1968 Chrysler Newport four-door sedan. The art car recently came up for sale on eBay, and though it may not be famous, it is quite the unique vehicle. RELATED: Check Out these Incredible "Burning Man" Art Cars

According to its owner, the Newport is said to house a rebuilt 318ci Chrysler V8 engine and three-speed automatic gearbox, which shows a claimed 72,000 miles traveled. While that’s not exactly the fastest or most potent drivetrain, it ought to serve adequately as a smooth highway cruiser, and as the owner describes, it continuously earns many smiles from passersby. This vintage of Newport is also regarded highly by classic Chrysler fans, and spans the years 1965 to 1968, mixing bold and attractive styling with engine performance that inspired, prior to the emissions-strangled V8s of the 1970s. As standard, Chrysler Newports of this era came fitted with the big 383ci V8s and came optional with massive 440ci engines, which got progressively more potent over this generation. And if it’s a design that looks familiar, that’s because the Chrysler Newport shared its bones with the full-size Dodge Polara, Plymouth Fury, and the ritzier Chrysler 300. As noted by the folks at Barnfinds, the interior does admittedly feel rather laking in creativity compared to the Newport’s outrageous exterior. Inside the headliner and rear seat covers are adorned in rainbow fabric, while a portable boom box pumps tunes from up front. Further, check out that huuuge brake pedal. You certainly can’t miss slamming on that! All in all, it’s a bit odd but also a bit heartwarming as well. As of writing though, the colorful Newport has yet to fetch any offers.
