This Private Plane is So Small It Will Fit in Your Driveway
A former Air Force and commercial pilot has come up with the perfect solution for storing your private plane. He designed an airplane that conveniently folds up so narrow, you can park it right in your driveway and even tow it behind your car. The Icon A5 is a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) that is the brainchild of Icon CEO Kirk Hawkins. He used his experience as a pilot during the design process, even down to details like the stick grip influenced by the F-16. He kept all the buttons and dials minimal so, despite the military influence, you don't have to be a Top Gun pilot to fly this thing. RELATED: Watch an Airplane do Donuts in the Snow
Hawkins' creation is a seaplane too, so you can either pull it up to the dock or fold down the wings and park it in your driveway. Its design is in part due to the influence of Klaus Tritschler, an award-winning designer of motorcycles, yachts, and private planes. This sleek plane comes in at only 1,510 pounds and can be towed by a standard SUV.
Its 100-horsepower Rotax 912 iS engine gives the Icon A5 a top speed of 109 mph at up to 15,000 feet in altitude. It will fly you 427 miles before needing to stop and refuel. You can order your Icon for a base price of $207,000. You only need a $2,000 deposit and with a three-year waitlist, have plenty of time to save the rest.
