Forget Crossovers, Citroen Proves 4x4 Vans Are Where It’s At With New Concept

Once a must-have item for busy homemakers, the minivan has fallen on some hard times in the US. Its market share is shrinking, its family appeal…waning. But one look at this svelte people-hauler might give you second thoughts about the common van—meet the SpaceTourer Hyphen Designed by French automaker Citroen as a concept vehicle, the SpaceTourer Hyphen brings some much-needed hype to the brand’s all-new family van, presented in a bright, cheerful package. Inspiration for its eye-catching design comes from French pop group HYPHEN HYPHEN, but it’s the van’s oily bits that may grab the most attention. It’s a proper four-wheel drive vehicle. According to Citroen, the SpaceTourer Hyphen has been bestowed a 4x4 system courtesy of Automobiles Dangel, which has quite an extensive track record for up-fitting Citroen and Peugeot vehicles with hardy four-wheel drive components. Look no further than the legendary 504 Dangel. The higher the altitude, the bigger the attitude…and the SpaceTourer Hyphen certainly has a bit of both. Citroen relates its styling to being SUV-like, what with the swollen wheel arches, pumped-up bumpers, and rocker panel protection. Its physique comes dressed in iridescent green, which makes way for a vibrant orange hue at the rear. On its feet sit an edgy set of 19-inch matte black “diamond effect” alloy wheels, wrapped in futuristic tires with elastomer strips embedded. All the better for taming what the wild throws at you, and without giving up the coveted sliding rear door. RELATED: These 6 Classic Cars are Surprisingly Good Off-Road

Inside things are equally edgy. The concept car’s three rows of seating fit multi-colored leather upholstery, each of which is uniquely styled, along with wool floor mats throughout. Wool. At the driver’s right side lives the robust business end of a six-speed manual transmission, which helps prod 150 horsepower to all four wheels from the Citroen’s BlueHDI diesel engine.
