Kia Wants to Build A Hot Hatchback That Eats Ford Fiestas For Breakfast
When a Korean automaker has plans to further poke Ford in the eye, you know things are about to get interesting. Kia, the same marque synonymous with cars like the quirky Soul SUV, now wants to get in the hot hatchback game here in the U.S. with a quick and fun vehicle all its own. The report comes from Autocar, and we're still in the process of confirming it via other sources. Nonetheless, the publication claims that with the arrival of the new sports car this year, the GT moniker will arrive alongside it, and those letter will be on certain U.S.-market Kia vehicles in hopes of heating up the lineup. The Rio hatchback will be one of the first to get the GT designation here in the U.S. in 2018. Slated to be a “Ford Fiesta ST” rival, the small Rio hatchback will likely also see a facelift before then. Details are still slim, but rumors are suggesting a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine under the hood, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 horsepower would be in order for the hot hatch.
The whole idea may sound silly to us Americans, but you might be forgetting Kia's very hot European Pro_Cee’d GT that takes on the Ford Focus ST more directly. With 204 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of 7.9 seconds, it's no slouch. Either way, things are about to get very interesting here in the states.
