CES 2016: BMW Introduces New Motorcycle Safety Systems

At CES 2016, BMW Motorrad displayed two new concepts that, if given the green light, will set BMW’s motorcycle division ahead of almost every other motorcycle manufacturer in the world. And it wasn’t some new-fangled mechanical technology that allows for pavement skimming lean angles, but rather two important pieces of safety technology. The first new product BMW Motorrad introduced was the company’s new HUD helmet. The concept for a HUD helmet has been around for quite some time, however this appears to be the first that’s truly come into existence. Other helmet makers like Skully, have been promising a HUD helmet for years, but have yet to deliver a finished product to its investors. BMW could beat them to the punch if this helmet makes production. RELATED: Laying a Motorcycle Down Sucks, As I Found Out

The HUD system works in conjunction with the electronic systems already built into your BMW motorcycle. The motorcycle’s ECU gathers data along hundreds, if not thousands, of crucial bits of riding data. It then transmits those impulses to the helmet, and is displayed on the riders right hand side on a viewing pane. Everything from fuel consumption, miles per hour, GPS, and other bits of information can be transmitted to the HUD inside the helmet. Additionally, BMW debuted a version of the company’s new Laser Light headlights first seen on the brand new 7-Series. The new headlight doubles the previous headlight design’s distance, which comes out to be 600 meters total. RELATED: 5 Of the Fastest Motorcycles On the Planet

These headlights have the ability to be one of the most important new designs within the motorcycling community. At night, it becomes very easy to out ride the headlights, meaning you’re moving at a faster pace that what the headlights can project. By doubling the distance, it makes for night riding much safer for the rider and all those around them. BMW’s Motorrad department have been on a role lately, and with these two new technologies possibly making their way to production, it could be a new BMW motorcycle renaissance that puts BMW atop the luxury motorcycle pile. Hopefully, we’ll be able to test these two new products soon. RELATED: The Honda CB1100 Will Make You Fall In Love With Riding
