Like the LA Lakers? You’ll Love This BMW Isetta

The BMW Isetta is not what you’d call an average classic car. Originally designed by Italian refrigerator manufacturer Iso, the Isetta was produced and popularized under license by BMW, and these “bubble cars” just about saved the company from dire financial straights.  It’s a remarkable and unlikely hero for the sporty BMW brand, but this bubble car isn’t exactly your average Isetta. As is markedly evident, this BMW takes its love of the Los Angeles Lakers to another level. It comes sporting a classic Lakers purple-and-gold color scheme, logos inside and out, and there’s even a diagram of the Staples Center court on the floor. If you fancy a basketball-shaped BMW of your own, you’re in luck. This LA Lakers tribute car dribbled its way onto eBay, and now it’s waiting for a new owner to slam dunk some cash. So what do you get for your hard earned greenbacks? NBA notoriety. The LA Lakers Isetta tribute features headlights and taillights painted like basketballs, a sunroof that is an actual basketball net, and Chuck Taylor Converse hubcaps. And that’s only the outside. Inside, occupants sit on a “Spalding” basketball themed bench seat, honk a basketball horn, and shift via a basketball gear knob. The door and side panels sport images of famous LA Lakers players and fans, including Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and even Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler. Mechanically speaking, the BMW Isetta is a very simple machine. Power comes courtesy of a single-cylinder BMW motorcycle engine, and it’s put to the rear wheels courtesy of a four-speed manual gearbox. Top speed? Just a hair over 50 mph. That said, this isn’t exactly the type of car you cruise for hours on the motorway. It was born out of the need for economical inexpensive city cars, and despite soaring classic car values today, they still can make for great weekend runabouts. What do you think?
