Bentley to Follow Bentayga with CUV and Electric Sports Car

Not long ago, the idea of a Bentley SUV was about as foreign as, well…a Bentley SUV. The popular body style marks a significant departure for the British luxury brand, which welcomes its new Bentayga model into showrooms next spring. But as new reports point out, it’s a trend likely to continue.  According to reports from a recent press event in Spain, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer suggested that a smaller Bentley SUV is currently in development, which will leverage a significant amount of components and technology from the 2017 Bentayga SUV and help spur the brand’s burgeoning sales even further. The UK’s Autocar notes that the new sub-Bentayga crossover-SUV will slot in size between the Porsche Macan and Cayenne SUVs, and likely retail for around £120,000 ($180,000). By comparison, the Bentayga asks a cool $229,000 base price. RELATED: Take a Closer Look at the 2017 Bentley Bentayga SUV

Details are still few, in fact, Durheimer told the UK publication that the SUV has yet to receive a green light from Volkswagen Group’s top brass, however the vehicle is said to be in the initial design and engineering phase. Seeing as how the unnamed SUV will utilize existing Bentayga components to reduce costs, there’s a possibility its 600-horsepower 6.0-liter W12 engine will make an appearance, though V8, diesel, and V6 hybrid powertrains are more likely. The sports coupe is noted to take a back seat to the development of the small SUV, but when it does resurface it will wield an all-wheel drive, all-electric variant, capable of blasting to 200 mph, targeting a range of 310 miles, and all with a curb weight of under 4,400 pounds. "We believe battery technology is reaching a point of where such vehicles are making sense," Durheimer told the website. "And the performance will be stunning.” Stunning indeed. On Monday, Bentley unveiled the Bentayga First Edition model in Los Angeles, limited to just 608 highly optioned cars globally, which will be the first delivered to customers.
