During the early morning on the day of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, competitors begin to roll in. The morning is unusually quiet, it’s before the crowds, before the judging, and before all the hoopla that begins when the events doors open.
The Dawn Patrol is when the cars are staged, cleaned, and dusted for the last time. People are more reserved, probably because their coffee hasn’t kicked in yet. Everything is still, subdued, except for the sound of carbureted engines piercing the morning’s damp air.

According to Coker, “Dawn Patrol has become somewhat of a quiet favorite among show attendees, as early risers gather on the show field to enjoy the staging of cars in the early morning sunlight. Serene and beautiful, the incredible setting mesmerizes as the world class gather of automobiles gracefully takes shape to the soundtrack of the sea.”
As someone that has witnessed this, it’s truly an evocative experience in those early dawn hours. And represents something that every enthusiast should experience.
