The Brum Brum Bike is the Cool Two-Wheeler for Little Adventurers
Most adults can recollect their early experiences pedaling a bike…and not all of them are fond memories. At the age of four or five, turning a bike’s pedals and keeping those handlebars straight can seem like the hardest thing in the world. Luckily, that’s where the balance bike comes into play. Balance bikes remove pedals from the equation, allowing little tykes to scoot around on their own two feet. The Brum Brum bike marks one of the latest balance bikes to hit the market, but unlike its metallic contemporaries, this Latvian-built two-wheeler springs for a more sustainable build material—wood. Designed for riders aged six and under, the Brum Brum features a birch and oak plywood frame, which serves as a natural suspension. The plywood composite provides enough flex to sop up dips and potholes, and helps keep the young rider’s spine in a neutral position. The Brum Brum rides atop 12-inch alloy wheels on tubeless tires, which should hold up to the abuse of a little one’s adventures.
To ensure that the little riders don’t jackknife their balance bikes from sharp turning, the Brum Brum bike limits steering to 45 degrees. And as the tykes grow, so does the Brum Brum—the wheels can be moved up and down on the front and rear forks to allow for longer legs. All totaled, the Brum Brum weighs just eight pounds.

With its eye-catching design, the bike has won and been nominated for a number of awards, including an A’Design Award, Latvian Art Directors Club award, and a nomination for the 2016 German Design Award. It isn’t what you’d call cheap, however.
The Brum Brum balance bike costs €299 or about $338 at today’s rates. That’s significantly more than what you might find at your local big box store, but for those with the extra cash, a penchant for cool, and a taste for beautiful design…perhaps it’s a must have.
