Take an Incredible Virtual Reality Tour of a Desert Off-Road Race
I’ve always been a fan of getting dirty while driving cars. Rally racing, and off-roading offer something special found in few other forms of racing. With that, getting to drive an 800-horsepower off-road buggy is about as cool as you can get. Supercars are amazing pieces of engineering and speed, but they can typically only stay on paved roads. These machines take high performance to the trail at blazing speeds. Few have ever experienced what it is like to ride in, let alone drive one of these buggies. So the guys at Nitto Tire’s have cooked up this quick video that lets us ride along with Off-Road Hall Of Famer Shannon Campbell in the most immersive 360-degree driving video we have ever seen. To accomplish this difficult feat of camera work, the Nitto team hooked up a 7-camera 360-degree rig that according to them, “gives the viewer an unprecedented level of immersion into the race.” It’s a remarkable leap in video technology, and one that has been making waves in the video industry as you can YouTube as the primary medium.
The video itself shows Campbell flogging his 800-horsepower buggy around Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. The camera system offers the viewer a shotgun-seat perspective, thereby giving them the best seat in the house. And by using your mouse, you can change your perspective and see what else is going on inside the cabin and outside the buggy. However, it not only shows off the ridiculousness that’s happening outside the cockpit of the buggy, but also how controlled Campbell is while make his way through the rutted raceway. It’s no wonder that he’s been so successful.

According to Nitto, the system will not only work on your computer and through the Oculus Rift, but also through your smartphone as well, giving you the ability to experience the entirety of an off-road racer wherever and whenever you want. It makes us want to get out and build a high-powered 4x4 rig right now!
