2016 Yamaha XSR700 is Retro-Modern Design at Its Finest

Within the last few years, old-school café racer motorcycles have seen a vast resurgence. Whether that was because of popular TV shows, or due to the aesthetic these motorcycles have in common with the “hipster” movement, the bikes themselves have once again come into the limelight of the motorcycle world. But with all those riders buying older bikes, motorcycle companies are losing potential customers. To combat that, companies like Ducati and Honda have introduced retro-style motorcycles that harken back to the days of the original café racers. Now, Yamaha is following suite. The company has released its new retro motorcycle with the XSR700, and it looks positively brilliant. RELATED: See More of the Stunning Yamaha XSR700

Using the same platform as Yamaha’s FZ-07, the XSR700 takes all the modern things we love from today’s motorcycles (fuel injection, integrated  turn signals, and an LED information display) and adds a retro style that screams, “I’m a badass.” Gone are the FZ-07’s side pods, front lamp, and sport-bike-style angular rear end. A new, single, round headlight is up in front to give it that 60s era café racer vibe. The gas tank has been made to look like a three-piece unit with a sheet of aluminum placed directly on the centerline of the tank. A shorty-style exhaust gives it a down-and-dirty sound straight from the past, and a well-formed, old-school dual seat completes the package. In addition to the retro style, Yamaha definitely wanted to make sure that this XSR700 was able to do the ton—100 mph in café racer slang. Using a 689cc engine, the motorcycle has been rated for 74 horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque. While that might not sound all that much, it is plenty to get you around town while riding with your friends. Sales for the new XSR700 will begin in November and is expected to be around the same price as its twin, the FZ-07 that currently sells for around $7,500. With that price, and this motorcycle’s good looks, it is sure to become an instant classic. RELATED: This is the Unbelievably Cool Tesla Model M Concept
