Racing homologation has provided the world some truly incredible road-going race cars. In NASCAR history, none stand taller than the storied Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird. Production numbers vary, but a scant 1,935 Superbirds in total are believed to have rolled off the line.  If the documentation of this ‘bird is correct, it could be the very last one ever built. The rarified 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird recently surfaced on eBay, and according to the seller’s documentation and registry information, it was the 23rd (and final) car produced during Plymouth’s final run of 28 batches. The original invoice shows that the Superbird was delivered to a Dodge dealership in Oregon, and the seller contributes that a dealership employee originally ordered it too late. The dealer then stepped in, pulled some strings, and got the order passed through. While tough to verify, it makes for a great backstory. For collectors, the undisputed Superbird to have remains the 425 horsepower, Hemi-equipped ‘bird, of which around 100 are known to have been built. This Superbird sports the standard 375 horsepower Super Commando 440ci V8 with the four-barrel carburetor and four-speed manual transmission. According to its registry paperwork, that makes it one of 1,084 440-equipped cars in the US and one of 458 of those to tote four-speeds. Back in 1970, a Plymouth Superbird would have rung up a price tag of $4,298 before options. Today, the bidding on this ‘bird has already soared past the $140,000 mark. A rare bird indeed.
