Audi Just Created A New Synthetic Fuel— And That’s A Huge Deal
Electric, hydrogen, and even wind power have all been labeled as viable options in our endless pursuit for alternative energy. So far, none have proven to be a serious option for the long term. But Audi thinks it might have its own answer— it’s called “e -benzin,” and it’s the first successful synthetic fuel the automaker has created without the use of petroleum. Together with Global Bioenergies, e-benzin not only lacks petroleum, but also sulfur and benzene meaning it burns extremely clean. It’s also rated at 100 octane and allows higher compression ratios for engines. Not to mention an increase in efficiency “Global Bioenergies has demonstrated the viability of the Audi ‘e-benzin’ production process,” said Audi. “This is a big step in our Audi e-fuels strategy.” RELATED: See Photos of the All-Electric Audi R8 E-Tron
E-benzin follows Audi’s e-diesel and soon to come e-ethanol synthetic fuels for use on an industrial scale. The testing of e-benzin should kick off in the next few months.bGlobal Bioenergies scientists will continue to modify e-benzin so that it can be created purely out of water, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and sunlight.
So why is this a big deal? If proven successful, e-benzin could replace gasoline as we know it. Of course, we won't know for sure until Audi puts it through final testing. Expect to see Audi produce more e-benzin in 2016.
