Ferrari Building Smaller V6 Sports Car to Rival Porsche 911

Outside of staggering performance, today's six-digit sports car market is fiercely competitive, highly diversified, and ever-expanding. In fact, its most recent entry – the hot 2016 McLaren 570S – just arrived last week. According to the recent tweetings of Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman, that segment is about to grow even more.  Lieberman divulged on Twitter that Ferrari has begun working on a twin-turbocharged V6 sports car, which will aim squarely at the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Mercedes-AMG GT, and the new McLaren 570S, and come priced at around $180,000. The source of the scoop comes from within Fiat Chrysler, according to Lieberman, and they've alleged a 2019 launch date for the car. Excited? You should be. However, there are a number of reasons that hint to its validity. Talk of a smaller, lower priced V6 Prancing Horse has pricked industry ears on multiple occasions over the past few years and, given Ferrari's new push towards turbocharging, a twin-turbo six would complement the current V8 range well. Further, a 2019 (or late 2018) debut would give Ferrari a crucial entry timeline for its new car. At that point, current newcomers like the 570S and AMG GT will be nearing mid-cycle refreshes, and the soon-to-be refreshed Porsche 991 generation will likely be in its closing years. It would also provide Ferrari an optimal chance to replace its base model California model (pictured), which featured a recent redesign but has been on the market since 2008.
