Which of Today's Cars are Future Classics?
Not everybody who buys a car today is thinking, “Hmm, will this be highly sought after in 25 years?” While important to some, factors like fuel economy, comprehensive warranties, and low price usually win out over collectability. But future classic status doesn't have to come with a sky-high price tag or a limited production run of “Sorry, not for you.” There are plenty of cars today that collectors ought to be itching for in two decades time. With a brand new powertrain and an important change in its suspension, the 2015 Ford Mustang ought to be one. Along that same muscled-up vein, the fresh-faced Corvette, newly teased 2016 Camaro, and 2015 Challenger Hellcat should also rank high on the classic lists. Rope in the 2015 BMW M4 and Porsche 911 and you have a few more solid entries for classic status. But those picks aren't exactly surprising. Dig deeper and you'll find a few other gems... much like the zippy Ford Fiesta ST, forward-thinking BMW i8, and the Subaru BRZ. At launch, the BRZ garnered a huge amount of press for its back-to-basics approach, nimble handling, and sporty boxer engine... though sales of it and its Scion brother have slumped. There's even speculation as to whether the Toyobaru twins can carry on. Low-volume, sporty driving, and limited production are all good signs for a future classic. Granted, nabbing the all-new Mazda MX-5 Miata probably couldn't hurt either. Alfa retails an extremely limited number of 4C's in the US, with prices starting at $53,900. Need something larger with classic status? If vintage truck popularity is anything to go by, Ford's SVT Raptor ought to go down as one of the Blue Oval's top off-road greats. Internet, what do you think?
