This Incredible Mercedes-Benz Surfboard is Made Entirely of Cork
Mercedes-Benz is continuing its work with surfer Garrett McNamara by creating a special surfboard made entirely out of cork. This is quite a contrast to the board created last year that was called the Silver Arrow of the Seas. That board sported a sleek silver finish that made it look right out of the future and more than a little like the kind of Mercedes-Benz we're used to seeing on the road. The original silver board [photo at bottom] was very technologically advanced and it looked the part. This time they've taken things in a new direction. This year's board is made only out of cork as a nod to Portugal where McNamara often surfs monster waves. The materials in the board are all locally sourced in Portugal, which is the world's largest producer of cork. RELATED: See Photos the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA
The cork also proved to be an ideal material. It is both lightweight and flexible, which makes it easier for the board to withstand the rough waters and huge waves found at Nazaré, Portugal.
McNamara currently holds a record for the tallest wave ever surfed. It measured over 80 feet tall and McNamara had to be towed to the top of it to catch the wave.
