Local Motors' New Sportscar is Crowd-Sourced and has the Best Name
If crowd sourcing a car seems like a crazy idea, you'll change your mind after seeing the Local Cars SF-01 Street Fighter. This is the world's first crowd sourced sportscar and it beat out over 200 other designs in the Sports Car Platform Design Contest. Designer Craig Thompson not only gets the privilege of being the winner, but he also gets a $7,500 grand prize, and a portion of each car that Local Motors sells based off of his original design. It looks just incredible with a tubular body, inboard suspension, room for an inline-four, inline-six, or even a V8 engine. He's even worked in a trunk and storage cubbies. Not to mention it's called the freakin' Street Fighter. PHOTOS: Check Out the Impressive 2014 Local Motors Rally Fighter
The SF-01 has some design features that made it stand out from other entries in the contest. It has a longer wheelbase than most at 100 inches and a maximum track width of 61 inches and was designed not just for use on the track, but for everyday driving.
Now that a winner has been chosen, it's time for Local Motors to turn it into a real car starting with some R&D. This means picking the components and materials that will find their way into the production version. If all goes as planned, we should see this car come to life by the end of the year.
