Only Women Can Drive and Ride in this Taxi
A new taxi service is launching in Greater New York with a very specific audience: women. Only women can drive the taxis and only women can hail them, too. It's a new service called SheTaxi (except in New York City where it's called SheRides) that launches Sept. 16. According to the New York Times, "The women’s livery service was started by Stella Mateo, a mother of two daughters, who said that she could have used a female driver to help shuttle them to soccer, field hockey, basketball and gymnastics practices when they were growing up." This isn't quite the pipe dream it sounds like. Mateo is married to the head of the NY State Federation of Taxi Drivers, so she has that going for her. She has also launched an app, of course, because nobody hails taxis the old fashion way any more.
Similar taxi services are also proving popular in Mexico (photo above) and India (photo below).

SheTaxis, which has a staff of six, has already recruited 50 female drivers, ranging in age from 21 to 70 (maybe it could be called Granny Taxis?). The service will collect fares through its app, only available for Apple currently, using credit or debit cards, and then send payments to the drivers.
Curious how to recognize a SheTaxi driver? They will be wearing pink pashmina scarfs, which is probably going to suck on a hot August day in Manhattan.
