Mazda Teases 2016 MX-5 Miata Ahead of September 3rd Reveal
Out with it already! In a recent Facebook post, Mazda teases its highly anticipated 2016 MX-5 Miata, which has collectively given the motoring world a pair of blue you-know-whats to complement the Miata’s slinky blue veil. Thankfully though, the months of waiting have finally ticked down to mere days. Mazda will pull the covers off the new MX-5 roadster in California on September 3rd in California. Until then, presumably nothing will get done as most of us are left daydreaming about what’s under the sheet. RELATED: See Photos of the 2014 Mazda MX-5 Concept
But there are a few things we do know about, for one – its chassis. At this year’s New York Motor Show, Mazda revealed the MX-5’s new lightweight architecture; set to shed more than 200 pounds from the current model and put it closer in weight to the original NA generation.
Power will come from Mazda’s efficient slew of Skyactiv four-cylinder engines, with the most potent versions pegged to make just north of 200-horsepower, funneled to the rear wheels through a polished and smooth six-speed manual gearbox.

Turbocharging remains a topic of interest on the Miata, especially across the pond. Fiat is expected to produce a new Fiat/Abarth Spider variant using the new MX-5 architecture, with engine options likely to include the 1.4-liter turbo from the Fiat 500 Abarth or the 1.7-liter four-banger from the Alfa Romeo 4C.
Judging by the curves seen in spy shots and that blue veiled teaser image, this new Miata looks to be the evolution that we’ve all wanted, and not a dilution from what we’re used to. Gird your loins, it's going to be a rough month.
