What’s More Depressing than a Lamborghini on Fire?
The short answer: few things. Supercars exude that notion of limitless possibility and defiance in the face of a conventional world. They are the Hollywood heroes of the automotive world, which isn’t exactly a cheery parallel to make as you watch one burn up on the side of highway. You remember the scene from Star Wars where Luke finds Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru? Well, that’s sort of what happened on Saturday near the village of Kings Langley, in the United Kingdom, when a first-generation Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera began spitting flames on the hard shoulder of the A41. The car, which cost around $217,000 when new, was apparently for sale at a local dealership, but we suppose this one’s not going to be setting sales records any time soon.
Firefighters got to the scene within minutes, however by that time the entire rear flank had been reduced to a smoldering wreck. Pre-accident, the Gallardo was good for zero to 60mph sprints in just under 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 195 miles per hour. Now…not so much.
Luckily though, no one was hurt in the incident, but traffic was delayed heavily for hours while road crews repaired the charred roadway.
