Mercedes Released the AMG GT Engine Specs
There are highly anticipated cars and then there’s the talked-about-in-whispers Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, which is on a completely different level. AMG has been keeping us alive with a slow IV drip of teaser shots, exhausts sounds, and now – in the firm’s most recent video – an up-close look at the engine underneath the GT, specs included. Dubbed the M178, Mercedes’ new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 puts out a substantial amount of power: 503-horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This gives the AMG GT 60hp less than the standard Mercedes SLS but offers the same torque figures. Impressive, no? RELATED: See photos of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG
But its power delivery is only half the story. Because of its smaller size (relative to the 6.2-liter V8 in the SLS), the engine is mounted lower and further back in the chassis to allow for better weight distribution and handling – made possible by space-saving features like dry-sump lubrication and turbos mounted between the cylinder banks.
It’s a smart move, especially since Mercedes is using the GT to target one of the world’s best handling sports cars – the Porsche 911.
