Company Behind Solar Roads Concept Exceeds Fundraising Expectations

Recently, we brought you news of an awesome concept– solar roadways that could generate an incredible amount of power for the US grid. We have an update from the folks behind the project, and they have raised the money necessary to move the project forward.

Solar Roadways recently announced their product, and that they were raising money to start development of the high strength cells which could cover all manner of main street and highway. On April 21, the company created an IndieGogo page, with the hopes of raising $1,000,000. If you look on their page today, you can see they were able to raise $1,637,469. And they still have 22 more days of the fundraiser.

As the page states, you can drive on these panels, and they are able to cut greenhouse gasses by 75%. The page also features this video demonstrating the conceived size and strength of the cells.

Perhaps one of the most impressive (and safer) aspects of the solar roads is how they can be illuminated. It would make lanes easier to see in both day and night conditions, and highlight special lanes, like HOV and bike lanes. We hope that with the money that Solar Roadways has raised (and will likely continue to raise in the next three weeks) will lead to meaningful development and bring this safe, green technology.
