Audi R8 LMX Features World’s First Laser Headlights
There’s always been a healthy rivalry between Audi and BMW. Both hail from Germany, both make great cars, and both know how to push each other respective buttons. So when BMW said the i8 would be the first production car to feature laser headlights, Audi didn’t take it sitting down. While BMW may have touted the i8 as first to the punch, Audi is saying that the R8 LMX is the “world’s first production car with laser high beams.” Check and mate. These new laser lights feature four high power laser diodes that give out a white light similar to many LEDs, but greatly increase vision and efficiency. The lights emit when the R8 gets up to a speed of 37.3 mph (60 km/h). Another new feature is the LMX’s ability to adjust the light pattern in order not to burden oncoming traffic.
Other than the introduction of laser lights, the R8 LMX features a new body kit ranging from an Ara Blue exterior to some carbon fiber aerodynamics and a new rear wing. The R8 also features ceramic brake discs and 19-inch alloys.

Under the hood is a 5.2-liter V10 that throws down 570 horsepower to all four wheels. It’s all connected to a seven-speed S tronic transmission that gives the R8 an acceleration to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds. Top speed sits at 199 mph (320 km/h).
For €120,000 ($165,000) you can pick up one of the “world’s first,” but move fast– only 99 examples will be available when deliveries begin in Germany this summer.
