Ford to Offer Performance Pack for 4-Cylinder Mustang?
It’s Earth Day, which means we have efficiency and green tech on the mind, but that doesn’t mean that the cars have to be boring. Advancements in drivetrains have meant that performance enthusiasts (facing ever-tightening fuel economy regulations) can have their high-speed cake and eat it too. The latest example of this comes from the new four-cylinder Ford Mustang. In the past, non-V8 Mustangs were regarded as pretenders, or derided as “secretary cars.” (That’s not fair to secretaries. You don’t know if they autocross or not on weekends). But the previous generation of the Mustang proved that the lesser engines could hold their own. If you recall, the 3.7-liter V8 Mustang is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first production car to have over 300 horsepower and achieve more than 30 mpg. To follow that, Ford is offering a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost powerplant. It will make “at least 305” horsepower, which is more than the naturally aspirated V6. According to Jalopnik, this four-cylinder Pony Car will even have the option of a Performance Pack, for $1995.

Jalopnik was able to track down some documents that dealers use to order cars. The name is officially called EcoBoost Performance Package, but does not state what the package will consist of. Our best estimate is that it would include a revised suspension, updated wheels and rubber, and other visual cues that would set it apart. We hope that they name the turbocharged ‘Stang “SVO,” as a nod to the last 4-cyl. turbo model, but as long as it delivers the goods– we don’t care what they call it.
