Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Gets an Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission
Eight is the new six, if we’re speaking in terms of automatic gearboxes. And in keeping with the times, Chevrolet has ditched the six-speed automatic in place of a new eight-speed beginning in 2015. The eight-speed on the standard Corvette Stingray will be a modified version of the one found on the new Z06. The new clutch and torque converter will be tuned in synchronization with the less-powerful Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8. Although, we won’t be seeing a dual-clutch gearbox anytime soon. Not only will this new gearbox provide ease of driving, Chevy says that it will also signify a 5 percent increase in efficiency over the standard six-speed auto, which returns an already impressive 28 mpg highway. And, at “wide-open throttle upshifts are executed up to eight-hundreths of a second quicker than those of the dual-clutch transmission offered in the Porsche 911.”

The auto-box will be available beginning with the 2015 model year, and the good ol’ seven-speed manual will continue to be available.
