Chicago Auto Show Day 1: Muddy Toyotas, Rally Beetles and More
It’s time again for the largest (by square footage) auto show of the year — Chicago. And while some may see it as a re-hashed Detroit show, there are a lot of hot new reveals that the windy city brings to the table. Check out what day one had to offer: Kia Soul EV
With the Soul being a pretty massive success for Kia, there’s only one way to go from here — more green. The electric battery is said to give the Soul a range of 100 miles on a single charge and should go on sale later in the year.
Nissan Frontier Diesel Runner Concept
Finally, truck lovers have something to swoon over. It’s the first mid-size diesel truck we’ve seen in the states in a long time. Unfortunately, it’s sitting on top of an old Frontier frame and isn’t actually going into production (yet).
Good news is, Nissan did promise that a 5.0-liter Cummins diesel would be available in the New Titan, in 2015. We don’t mind waiting for that.
So it may not be as pretty as the concept, but the new Subaru Legacy is definitely something to look at. Thankfully, it does keep many cues from the concept, albeit toned down and given a more sedan-like profile.
Under the hood sits 2.5- and 3.6-liter engines. We'd prefer the latter.
Toyota TRD Pro Series
Toyota pulled out all the stops and really got down and dirty in Chicago this year — literally. Introducing the new TRD Pro Series, the mostly aesthetic upgrades pay tribute to iconic Toyota off-roaders of past.
The Tundra, 4Runner and Tacoma all received the TRD treatment, and feature adjusted suspension, off-road tires, new exhaust and minor interior upgrades.
Volkswagen Beetle GRC
The star of day one was more of a surprise than anything. It’s a Beetle — but not just any Beetle. Together with Andretti Sports Marketing, Volkswagen unveiled the hotted-up Beetle GRC for this summer’s X Games.
Set to be driven by Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, this 560-hp, all-wheel drive Beetle is ready to take rally head on.
