10 Vehicles For Setting A Cross-Country Driving Record

Last month (Oct 19 to be exact) Ed Bolian left the Red Ball Garage in New York City. At the helm of a modified Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG, Bolian set out to cross the country in record time. Not only did he beat the previous record, he smashed it — getting from NYC to LA in just 28 hours and 50 minutes. That time bests the previous record, set in 2006, by nearly three hours, and trounces the Google Maps estimate for a cross-country trip by 11 hours. It was an amazing feat, but it got us thinking, what vehicle would you use to make the 2,813-mile trek? Here are some of our favorites: Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

What better way to follow up the record setting run than the vehicle that the CL-Class replaces. The CL has always been based on the S-Class, so the name change doesn’t really change too much – and that’s a good thing. 2011 Honda Odyssey

The problem with making the trip yourself is that you might get tired at some point. With a minivan, you can load it up with several co-drivers and never look back! 2012 Land Rover Defender Special Edition

Sure, you could make the 2,813 miles on road, or you could drive as the crow flies. There are few vehicles as capable as the Defender, so forget roads, just keep the compass headed west. 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Pacific Concept

The Corvette would be a fun way to make it across country. What better way to make that trip than in a one-of-a-kind SEMA ride with your eventual destination in the name? 2012 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

The Corvette would most likely be cramped and uncomfortable for a cross-country trip. So why not make that trip in a vehicle that has Corvette power, but plenty of space and a wagon body style? A supercharged V8 in a station wagon is typically the answer to any question. Citroen DS

There is no guarantee that the roads will be in great shape from state to state. As a Massachusetts resident, I can tell you that our roads are terrible — almost as bas as Detroit’s roads. Be prepared for any kind of bump in the road with the oil-pneumatic suspension of the DS. 2002 Audi Allroad Quattro

Basically allows you to make that same “as the crow flies” trip as the Land Rover, but with features like heated seats and a premium stereo. These are important when you are in a car for almost 30 hours. 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid

One has to assume that there was a lot of speeding taking place on this trip. That means you need a car that can blend in, and there is no more ubiquitous vehicle than the beige bomber that is the Camry. If you opt for the Hybrid you can even ration fuel on the trip. 2014 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

We jest about several of the cars on this list, but compared to the CL-Class that made the trip, this would be the best upgrade. It is large, luxurious, powerful, and even has a comfortable second row of seats for drivers that you can share the workload with. 2011 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

OK, so the kid that made the cross-country run required a bedpan to do so. That does not sound comfortable at all. So screw setting a record and take your sweet-ass time crossing the country and take it all in.
