959 to GT40: Photos From the 2013 Boston Cup
Yesterday, I headed down from my apartment to the Boston Common. The occasion was not to view the freshly developing foliage. Nor was it to take in the street performers or homeless guys that lay on the benches and smell like meat and cheese. Nope, I was there for the Boston Cup, a classic car show, now in its second year. Created by Boston businessman Rich Doucette and his partners, the show is shaping up to be one of the next great classic car shows. Cars are broken into classes (including a focus on cars that were originally made in Massachusetts), and owners can’t bring the same car two years in a row. Here are some of the highlights.
This hand pump wagon was built in Paul Revere’s foundry in 1792. It was presented by the Boston Fire Department Museum.
A 1959 Porsche 550a Spyder sits, prepped for vintage racing. The 550 was the model of Porsche that James Dean died in.
The individual parts of the Factory Five GTM are produced in Wareham, MA. It is a “kit car” or project car, which means the buyer needs to build the car and provide the engine. Some assembly required.

This 1965 Ford GT40 was a road-going version of the model that won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is regarded as one of the greatest American racecars of all time.

The Porsche 959 is one of the greatest supercars of the 1980s. With a twin-turbocharged flat six and advanced all-wheel drive, the 959 was years ahead of its time. This and the GT40 were real treats from the Boston Cup.
