Know Your Genre: Dekotora
It was not too long ago, that understanding the automotive enthusiast world was a very simple undertaking. You had muscle cars, sport compacts, and import tuners. That was just about it. Then something happened; the automotive world exploded with new genres and sub-genres, and now, it's hard to keep track of all of them. One in particular has caught our attention, and that is the realm of Dekotora. So what is Dekotora? Well, the first thing you need to know is that it is not a performance or sportscar genre, like so many that we are familiar with. Instead, Dekotora is a Japanese trend, which is an abbreviation for Decorative Truck. It is a way of adding some life to a typical commercial trucks. It was influenced in the 1970's by a Japanese movie Torakku Yaro (Truck Guys), and then later influenced by Japanese Gundam films. Basically, you take a commercial truck, and slather it in chrome and neon, but there is so much more to it.
