Ariel Atom Stripping Down with Titanium Chassis

The Ariel Atom already is a sight to see, both on the road and the track. The lightweight minimalist design does away with all the fuss of electronics, windshields and body panels. In their place are a gold-coated chassis, four wheels and a racing helmet. It is the ultimate track car. Now though, looking for even more pure performance from the Atom, new reports from Autocar suggest that Ariel is digging into a bit of research regarding an even lighter titanium chassis. That said, it should bring to total weight down to an impressive 500 kg (approx. 1,102lbs).

This cutting down will reduce the weight of the chassis by about 40 percent and bring to overall weight of the car down by about eight percent. Ariel is still unsure whether this will be a special edition Atom, replacing the current steel-based vehicle. The other path is to put all its eggs into one basket and eliminate steel from the process altogether, it is most definitely something of interest to the brand. At any rate, a lighter Atom should make for some massive power figures for anyone brave enough to get behind the wheel of said track monster.
