Bonhams to Auction Rare Mercedes-Benz F1 Racer

Bonhams Auctions are known to attract some of the rarest cars in the world. Barrett-Jackson may feature some chromed-out Mustangs, but could never hold court for vehicles like the Rolls-Royce used in The Great Gatsby. It is with this in mind that we bring you news that one of the rarest and most expensive Mercedes-Benz racecars of all time will be going on the block. The Mercedes-Benz W196 was built in 1954, and featured a 2.5-liter inline-8 cylinder engine. For the 1954 season, Juan Manuel Fangio was at the helm, leading the car to victory at both the Swiss and German Grand Prix races. The car featured direct injection, a spaceframe tubular chassis, and inboard brakes. These may seem like mundane technologies, but in the 1950's, these items were years above the competition. This car is being auctioned off at the Bonhams Auction on July 12 the the Goodwood Festival of Speed. You may want to start saving now.
