To Infiniti and Beyond: Q50 Looking to Thrust Into Mid-Size Luxury Stardom

It's pretty common knowledge that the Bavarians have controlled a large majority of the mid-size luxury market with their ever-loving 3-Series. Lately though, companies like Cadillac, Audi, Mercedes and even Buick have found some success, albeit relatively minimal. Cadillac even captured this year's North American Car of the Year with the ATS. Out of each of these companies though, none can be found East of Munich. These days, companies like Lexus, that spend most of its time looking for a new identity and Acura, well, who stopped being anywhere near relevant with the departure of the NSX, haven't been able to break through the barrier that is the 3-Series and better compete with the Germans. Infiniti, on the other hand is a bit of a darker horse. Like Lexus and Acura, the Nissan luxury subsidiary is finding itself amidst a bit of a re-branding phase. The previous "G" models, now carrying a "Q" moniker, and the SUV's receiving a "QX" badge in the process. This renaming strategy, Infiniti hopes, will give the lineup a fresher start and give buyers the opportunity to take a second look at luxury sedan over competition such as Audi and BMW.

To Infiniti and Beyond: Q50 Looking to Thrust Into Mid-Size Luxury Stardom

Along with a whole new set of names, don't think the Q50 comes without packing a bit of a mid-size-luxury punch. Building on the "legendary" sport sedan designs of past, the all-new Q50 receives a more appealing front fascia including LED's and a revised grille. On the rear, much of the same; smoother, more luxury-driven taillights accentuating a fully re-sculptured bumper and trunk. All this molded to a handsome new set of black-and-silver five-spoke wheels. On the inside, Infiniti fit a simpler, more precise center console that they say combines, "modern luxury, and user-focused advanced technology." All this newfound "modern luxury," will be paired to either a 3.5-liter, 296-horsepower V6 in a hybrid powertrain or a 3.7-liter, 328-hp V6. The 2014 Infiniti Q50 goes on sale early next year.
