Five Best Holiday Road Trip Rides

As we mentioned earlier today, making the trip to see family during the Holidays can be a grueling experience for driver and passenger alike. Hopefully the suggestions to tune out your loved ones will make the drive to Aunt Esta’s house a little more bearable- but what about the driver? Short of telling the family to screw off, there is really no way out of dealing with the drive if you are the pilot of said holiday road trip vehicle. So how the hell do you improve upon that? The simple answer is to upgrade your ride- so here are some suggestions of vehicles that are so good you will actually look forward to driving tomorrow! Porsche Panamera:

The Panamera was developed as the ideal grand touring car, which is the European term for a road trip– so you’ll be classing up yours! The Panamera has the ideal combination of power and handling, but with the Porsche’s adjustable suspension, it also has a very smooth ride. You’ll be sopping up the miles with ease! It should also be noted that it is a 2+2, meaning that there are two divided bucket seats in the back, rather than a bench. Not only does that divide the kids out back, but if you have more than two kids, than you can’t make the trip! Technicality for the win. Jeep Grand Cherokee:

Traffic is a bitch, and its even worse when you are eye level with an 18-wheeler. What better way than to rise above it than to get an SUV that can actually raise and lower for driving conditions. On highways, the Jeep hunkers down close to the road for aerodynamics, and if you get tired of sitting in traffic, just engage the off-road mode and drive literally over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house! Humvee:

If driving off road just is not direct enough for you, a Humvee could likely drive right OVER those in front of you in traffic. It can be outfitted as a wagon for more personnel (family members), and mortar rounds to clear a path on I-95.  American General offers an H1 kit car, with no engine or transmission. You could drop a GM flex-fuel V8 that runs on E85 ethanol fuel, if only to shut up your green-thumb Terrafugia Transition:

Why can’t things be more like the Jetson’s, just drop out of your sky-level apartment in a flying car and heave off to your uncle’s place on Alpha Centuri. We’re quite a ways from that, but the Terrafugia Transition is a great first step. Less of a flying car, and more of a drivable plane, you can drive the Transition out of your garage and to your local airport for takeoff. Small airstrips are more common than you think, so this could be a reality. Bonus: it only has two seats, so you don’t have to bring the kids! Amphibious Vehicle:

Many of you will be making the trip over a large body of water. What if you live in San Jose and have family in Oakland? Or live in Manhattan and are going to CT. Those bridges and tunnels can be the worst bottleneck for traffic, so just bypass it with an amphibious vehicle. There are plenty, from Boston’s duck boats, to the CAMI Hydra Terra, or even James Bond’s submersible Lotus Esprit. While those suckers are sitting in 5 miles of traffic before the bridge, you are skating across the channel, laughing your ass off! You don’t have to put up with that crap- so get creative people!
