New Porsche Boxster vs. New Porsche 911? It's a Lot Closer Than You Think
Le Roi est mort. Vive Le Roi! Ah the French, they have such a way with words. The €64 million question is, if Porsche would ever let the 981 Boxster be better than the 991 Carrera. There’s been a lot of smack going down in the blogosphere and on forums everywhere. The common man - you know, someone that can write a large check or qualify for a low interest auto loan is probably asking him or her self that very question at this very moment. "Should I spend my hard earned scratch on the new Boxster S or the base Carrera?”
It’s a tough question, the 991 is almost $30K more. And really to be even in the same universe that 991 would need be a stripper, sans a lot of go fast bling like PASM, PTV, PDK, and a lot of other “P’s”. And that Boxster S would be loaded with tons of kit. The 991 has a lot going for it – 350 horsepower and 4.6 sec 0-60 time. The Boxster S is very close behind – 315 horsepower (but several hundred pounds lighter) and 4.8 sec 0-60 time. But then again the 991 is an icon, flagship of the Porsche line. The knock on the Boxster? It gets the rap as the poor-man’s Porsche. Would Stuttgart ever let the Boxster get that close to their flagship?

The new Boxster is so good, sublime from every angle – interior, exterior, new top, two trunks and fantastic driving dynamics. It has grown up and grown closer to the Carrera. I am not sure if Porsche meant for them to get that closer. But still, $30K is a big gaping delta. My money? I’ll take the Boxster S, or better yet, wait for the new Cayman. The King is dead. Long live the King!
