This Rare Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is on eBay Right Now
This week's eBay Car of the Week is a real doozy. Exotic cars are always popular and have that expensive allure, but this 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR Super Sport sits in a class by itself. When you are in a the market for a race car for the road, and you have deep pockets like the Sultan of Brunei, then this is the car you want to buy. Actually, it has a pretty reasonable "Buy It Now" price of $1.4 million. Not bad for a ultra-exclusive piece of automotive history. Read on to find out what this exotic is just that special.
To appreciate how cool and exclusive this ride is, you need to have a bit of a history lesson. When the German Touring Car series, the DTM, folded in 1996, Mercedes needed a top tier racing series to show off their engineering excellence. Their main option at the time was the FIA GT series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They build the CLK-GTR race car to compete in these two motorsports spectacles.
To satisfy some of the sporting regulations of the series, Mercedes was required to build 25 road-going versions of their race car. This prime example is number 17 of 25 and only has 1,500 miles on the clock. There are very few differences from the race car to the road version. Most easily noticed is the wraparound rear spoiler that replaced the adjustable straight spoiler from the racing version.
While the initial race cars were powered by a 6.0L V12 engine, the Super Sport variant for sale here is equipped with a ridiculous 7.3L V12 (the same as in the Pagani Zonda) that makes 720 hp (according to the seller) . This propels the CLK-GTR to 60 mph in a very short 3.0 seconds and up to a top speed of 234 mph. There are only two versions of the Super Sport models, chassis #3 and this one, chassis #17.
So, not only do you get all the exclusivity of owning a Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, of which there are only 25 in the world, but you also get the extra-exclusivity of owning a Super Sport, making it 1 of 2 in the world. The CLK-GTR held the distinction of being the most expensive production car in the world, until that upstart Bugatti Veyron ruined it.
So, if you are the type to hang out in the Ferrari and Lamborghini crowd, and you think the everyday 458 Italias and Aventadors are getting a little stale, maybe it's time to upgrade to something truly unique. The auction is running through August 28th, but you might want to just buy it now if you have the cash. This clearly fits the definition of a "once in a lifetime" purchase, unless of course you are good friends with a certain Sultan in Brunei.
