The 5 Best of RM Auctions Includes Shelby, Audi and Mercedes-Benz

Since 1991, RM Auctions has been known worldwide for offering the best when it comes to classic car auctioneering. We've seen some of the most beautiful classics and racing division vehicles make their way across their stage in the past. Now, this two day event is host to some of the most beautiful and expensive classic cars known to man, and like past events this year will not disappoint. With classic race cars and outrageous concepts getting us more hot and bothered than a 50 Shades of Grey book club, we wanted to take a look at what automotive artworks we will get to drool over this year. 5. 1960 Plymouth XNR Concept
The 5 Best of RM Auctions Includes Shelby, Audi and Mercedes-Benz
The Basics: Make: Plymouth Model: XNR Concept Year: 1960 Price: N/A Engine: 6-cylinder Horsepower: 250 When design genius of Chrysler at the time Virgil Exner looked at the Plymouth lineup he saw bold, beautiful muscle. Granted, a great thing to behold. But what he felt was missing was an American roadster, the first of it's kind. So after what we assume was countless nights of basement sketches and watching H.G. Wells movie marathons, he came up with what we now know as the Plymouth XNR Concept. A dare we say 'funky' and futuristic concept inspired by the post-war jets and rockets throughout the late 50's. Unfortunately, this one-and-only concept  never made its way to the sales floor, but it did make its way around the world switching owners several times. In 2008, then owner Karim Edde took the dwindling XNR for a two year overhaul at RM Restoration in Canada.  After that, what was thought to have been a concept lost for good now makes its 50-year journey back to the U.S. to be sold on the Monterey stage. 4. 1965 Shelby 427 Competition Cobra
The 5 Best of RM Auctions Includes Shelby, Audi and Mercedes-Benz
The Basics: Make: Shelby Model: 427 Competition Cobra Year: 1965 Est. Price: $1.5-$1.8 million Engine: V8 Horsepower: 600 As we saw with the L-88 Corvette, another American racer will be on the bill next month, this time a Cobra. The Cobra in itself is an extremely rare car to stumble upon. As for a competition-spec Cobra, well that's a one-in-a-million shot. Thankfully, RM Auctions find themselves being able to give this model a new home. This 1965 Shelby 427 Competition Cobra is in this writer's opinion, one of the most beautiful cars to grace God's green earth; that classic, beautiful shape accented by a low center of gravity, massive racing tires and a wide open intake. This racer competed in countless FIA races, but unfortunately never had a huge winning history. Due to changing regulations and inconsistent racing, RM says that "very, very few cars remain like this today." 3. 1967 Ford GT40 Mark I
The 5 Best of RM Auctions Includes Shelby, Audi and Mercedes-Benz
The Basics: Make: Ford Model: GT40 Mark I Year: 1967 Est. Price: $2.3-$2.7 million Engine: V8 Horsepower: 380 Every car guy I know has had at least one dirty sexual thought about the Ford GT40 at one time or another, including myself. This one is no exception to our collective perversion. A 1967 Ford GT40 Mark I, one of the most well documented and pristine models of all time is primed for an exorbitant sale. From original, it has only been handed over to two private collectors who kept it mainly stuffed up as a garage queen. As it sits, this GT40 Mark I is one of the original 133 made and has only 4,500 original miles to date. 2. 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR
The 5 Best of RM Auctions Includes Shelby, Audi and Mercedes-Benz
The Basics: Make: Mercedes-Benz Model: CLK GTR Year: 1998 Est. Price: $1.2-$1.5 Million Engine: 7.3L, V12 Horsepower: 720 There are a very limited of number of cars that can be considered "instant classics."  This specific Mercedes-Benz  is just that. The CLK GTR was one of the most stunningly designed and psychotically imagined cars ever created. 720-hp came out of the naturally aspirated 7.3L V12 along with a double wishbone suspension, actuated coil springs with shock absorbers and four-wheel ventilated carbon fiber brake discs. A Mercedes truly built for some competition racing. This particular model is the first one of only 25 ever built, and has only 1,335 miles from new. 1. 2001 Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype Racing Car
The 5 Best of RM Auctions Includes Shelby, Audi and Mercedes-Benz
The Basics: Make: Audi Model: R8 Le Mans Prototype Year: 2001 Est. Price: $1-$1.5 Million Yet another instant classic made a name for itself with a whole host of racing victories around the world. From 2002-2006, this one of 16 models Audi R8 racked up an impressive racing record, only losing 16 races during that time. It first claimed a win at Sebring in 2000, Jarma in 2001, an enviable seventh place finish at Le Mans in 2002 and seven, yes seven, American Le Mans Championships from 2001-2007. It made its last racing appearance at the Road American series in 2007. The RM Auction in Monterey will take place next week from August 17th to the 18th.
