British Invasion: Supermodels from Aston Martin, McLaren and Noble Go Topless

Though we wish were writing about Kate Beckinsale, or some top heavy British glamour model's topless photos being leaked from a hacked cell phone, that's not our beat. We've got something better. The Mclaren MP4-12C, Aston Martin Vantage V12 and the Noble M600 are now all available as drop-tops just in time for summer. About 50 years ago, a couple of guys from Liverpool landed on American shores and changed the face of popular music for ever. They called themselves the Beatles. Thing is, they weren't the first British band to make it here in the states. The British Invasion began much earlier in the summer of 1962 when The Tornado's  became the first British band to top the U.S. charts. But the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who quickly eclipsed all of the milestones established by earlier bands. Like those revolutionary bands, the latest wave of British supercar convertibles have the formula for top down driving already pinned down. With a balance between grand touring comfort, savage performance, and the lovable charm of a bulldog, these three are set to take on the established drop-top elite from Italy and Germany.

Released earlier this week is the roadster version of our perrenial favorite the Aston Martin V-12 Vantage. The V-12 Vantage Roadster adds the open motoring experience to the most visceral Aston Martin currently for sale. Powered by the the same 510-horsepower, 6.0 liter V-12 found in the coupe, the roadster makes the run to 60mph in a slightly slower 4.5 seconds, but is still capable of hitting 190 mph. A top speed run in a convertible with a bellowing V-12 has to be one of life's better experiences.

Inside the interior is pretty much what we've come to expect from Aston Martin over the last ten years. Leather, brushed aluminum and more leather. It's simply gorgeous in this red leather with the contrasting white stitching. We'd like to know how many cows sacrificed themselves in the name of luxury, so we could burn that number into the parking lot at PETA headquarters with the V-12 Aston's massive 315 section rear tires. Seriously Aston, we think it would be good PR. You know to reach us.

While Aston Martin V-12 Vantage has charming good looks and talent that everyone can appreciate, the Mclaren MP4-12C Spider is pure rock-and-roll. Building on the take no compromise attitude of  the MP4-12C , the Spider carries over all the great things about the coupe, including the carbon "Mono-cell" chassis and the new for 2013 615-horsepower, twin-turbo V-8. Adding open air motoring to its long list of abilities seems to make perfect sense.

The center piece of this update is the retractable hard top. It's capable of doing the dissapearing dance in 17 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. What's more impressive is that the convertible version requires no additional strethenging to compensate for the lack of a roof, meaning the convertible version weighs a scant 82 lbs more than the coupe. So again, no compromise here, just more awesome.

The best part about all of this is the hardtop looks almost identical to the coupe. It looks just as good with the top up as it does with it down. No awkward styling or noisy, claustrophobic cabin here. Just engineering excellence. Watch it action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrPpxwYcFMM&feature=player_detailpage

British Invasion: Supermodels from Aston Martin, McLaren and Noble Go Topless

One of the purest cars currently on sale, the Noble M600 has been called a lot of things. "Insane", "child eating", "widow maker", and "a modern day Ferrari F40" to name a few.  So, for the rawest supercar on sale to drop its top means there probably isn't a more exciting car available. With no ABS or electronic gizmos like stability control and on-board computers to get in the way, the Noble M600 Convertible is most definitely The Who of this British Invasion. Though probably not the best to look at, or the fastest and most comfortable, it's definitley the car that is more about the experience of driving than anything else.  Though the picture here is only a rendering, we're pretty sure that Noble will put this convertible version into production.
