Your Ride: 1965 Chevrolet Corvette
It's hard to envision James Bond driving anything but an Aston Martin. Joel Fromkin is this way with Corvettes. "Everyone who knows me, knows I am obsessed with Corvettes," Fromkin admits. A Vette fanatic, he took his friends by surprise when he started inquiring about a Dodge Challenger... Boldride: How did you acquire the ride? Fromkin: I was actually looking to buy a Dodge Challenger. A friend of mine, who happens to own Unique Corvettes, started questioning why I was going to buy a Challenger. He kept telling me “you can’t buy a Challenger, you’re a Vette guy,” and that, I am. Unique Corvettes happened to have a 1964 and 1965 Corvette on display. As soon as I laid eyes on the ’65 I knew I just had to have it. What drew you to the ’65 over the ’64? Everything was perfect including the color, options, steering wheel and wheels. The blue exterior, white interior color combination was absolutely stunning. This particular 1965 model had a lot of options. There was a high performance 327/365 engine, a solid lifter motor, 4-speed transmission, factory side pipes, AM/FM radio and power windows. There was even a convenience lighting package that gave you interior lighting, glove box lights and reverse lights. The teak telescopic steering wheel is special, along with the Kelsey-Hayes knock off wheels. Wheels just aren't made like this any more; you need a lead hammer to take those babies off, there are no such things as lug nuts.
What's an inside fact about the Corvette only an owner would know about?
The 1965 model was the first year to receive standard four-wheel disc brakes. The 1964s and earlier had drum brakes.
What have you done to make it a bolder ride?
I was fortunate enough to have found my car in terrific condition. Every single thing about the car is original; it even has the window sticker and the metal Protect-O-Plate. I did some touch-up work on the paint, just minor blemishes. I had the driver’s seat reupholstered and installed a new glove box door. My Vette also wears a personalized ‘CLASIC65’ license plate.
What do you feel like when you drive your Vette?
I feel like I’m going back in time. It’s my own time machine and it’s not a DeLorean haha.
What do you love about it?
Besides everything about the car, it would have to be all the attention I receive when behind the wheel. Regardless of age, every head turns and stares no matter where I take my Vette. As soon as I pull into the neighborhood everyone knows I've arrived.
Is there anything you would change about your Vette?
I can’t think of one thing I would want to change if I could. It’s a perfect classic. Doing any modifications to a classic car should be a crime. It’s in wonderful condition and most classic cars I see with modifications loose their ‘classic’ touch, not to mention it depreciates the value.
What's your favorite memory of your car?
I have so many favorite memories. A lot would have to come from winning Best in Show or the First Place trophy at every car show I participated in. I also love driving the Freeport Nautical mile since it’s on the water. There is a big outdoor scene in Freeport where everyone wants to talk about my car as they stare it up and down.
