An action-packed qualifying session at Baku. Here are the results.

Nico Rosberg grabbed pole position for the European Grand Prix as teammate Lewis Hamilton crashed against the wall in Q3.

The German, who also made contact with the wall on the lap that secured him pole, finished on top with a 1:42.758, beating Force India's Sergio Perez by over seven tenths of a second.

Perez put on a superb showing but will drop to sixth on the grid after his penalty for a gearbox change is applied.

Hamilton will start from ninth position after he damaged his car during his second run in Q3.

Hamilton had set the quickest Sector 1 time in his first attempt, but the Briton went off at Turn at 15 once more after locking up with his final set of new supersofts tyres.

His off at least forced teammate Rosberg to back off.

During his second run, however, Hamilton made yet another mistake and touched the wall at Turn 11, damaging his left front suspension and forcing the session to be red-flagged with two minutes left.

Hamilton will start tomorrow's race from 10th place.

Unlike most of his rivals, Rosberg did not return to the track for the final two minutes of running.

Daniel Ricciardo managed to improve in the dying seconds and will start from third, ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the quickest Ferrari.

Kimi Raikkonen qualified fifth ahead of Felipe Massa, Daniil Kvyat, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

Rosberg fired a warning shot at the start of the second segment, lapping in 1:42.520, a time that was 1.7 seconds quicker than his closest rival at that point.

Hamilton made things hard for himself when he overshot Turn 7 with two minutes left and when he was still in 10th position.

But the Briton improved in his final run and moved up to second, albeit a second off Rosberg's pace.

Romain Grosjean will start 11th after outqualifying teammate Esteban Gutierrez for the first time in three races.

Nico Hulkenberg, who spun early in the session, qualified 12th and nearly a second off Perez's pace following some confusion about the timing of his final lap.

Carlos Sainz was unable to match teammate Kvyat and qualified down in 13th, ahead of McLaren's Fernando Alonso, Gutierrez and Felipe Nasr in the quickest Sauber.

Rosberg needed just one lap in Q1 to set the quickest time of the weekend, as both Ferrari drivers stayed in the pits for several minutes.

Hamilton had a scare at Turn 15, but managed to rejoin after going in reverse.

There were more serious problems for Grosjean, however, as the Frenchman reported brake issues after going off twice.

"I can't do anything," Grosjean lamented on the radio.

Rosberg broke the 1m44s barrier with eight minutes left, the German setting a best time of 1:43.685.

At the back, Manor duo Rio Haryanto and Pascal Wehrlein put on one of the team's strongest showings of the season, the Indonesian qualifying in 17th ahead of his teammate.

There was massive disappointment for Jenson Button, however, as the Briton was knocked out in Q1 for the first time this season.

Marcus Ericsson also failed to reach Q2, the Swede hitting the wall during his final lap at the end of the session.

Renault had another poor day and finished at the bottom of the times, Kevin Magnussen ahead of Jolyon Palmer.
