This expansion brings the company's total Takata recall in the U.S. to nearly 4.75 million vehicles.
Toyota will add an additional 1.584 million vehicles to its Takata airbag inflator recall in the United States. The company's campaign expansion will replace the front passenger airbags in the:
- 2009-2011 Corolla, Matrix
- 2006-2011 Yaris
- 2010-2011 4Runner
- 2011 Sienna
- 2008-2011 Scion xB
- 2007-2011 Lexus ES
- 2010-2011 Lexus GX
- 2006-2011 Lexus IS
The latest expansion is Toyota’s response to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s mandate to replace 35 million to 40 million Takata inflators that lack a desiccant, which is a substance that absorbs moisture. Research indicates that exposure to high humidity for a prolonged period causes the propellant in the components to deploy too forcefully. This can make the inflator rupture and shoot metal shrapnel at occupants. Experts blame the safety issue for at least 13 deaths worldwide and hundreds of injuries.
Toyota will contact the affected owners by first class mail. Depending on the model, dealers will replace either just the inflator or the entire front passenger airbag assembly. According to Reuters, this recall expansion will take Toyota’s Takata recall total to 4.73 million vehicles in the U.S.
Other automakers have started announcing details of their expanded inflator replacement campaigns, too. For example, Daimler recently said it would set aside $561 million to fix 197,000 vehicles in the U.S. Reports also indicated Honda could enlarge its Takata recall by 21 million vehicles worldwide.
