Remember the rather odd Concept D from last year? It’s now making a very nice transition to a production model with a far better design.
It’s one of those somewhat rare cases when a production model actually looks better than the previewing concept. Usually, car manufacturers tease us with gorgeous concepts (I’m looking at you, Subaru) and end up putting on the market a product with a heavily diluted design. While the Avancier won’t win any beauty awards, it’s certainly a major improvement compared to the Gundam-styled Concept D.
If the name of the midsize SUV rings a bell, that’s because Honda sold a five-seat wagon with this moniker in Japan between 1999 and 2003. As for the 2016 Avancier, it will serve as Honda’s cream of the crop in China and it will be the first model sold in the People’s Republic with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine.
Honda is keeping the other technical details shrouded in mystery, but further info is expected in the following months prior to the model’s launch before the year’s end. From what we are seeing in the adjacent images and video, the midsize SUV has LED headlights and taillights, tri-zone climate control, big infotainment screen, lots of rear legroom, leather upholstery, and many other niceties.
The Avancier debuts today at the Beijing Auto Show where it is being exhibited alongside the new Civic and the Accord Hybrid which is making a comeback.
