The Honda Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale next year.

The Honda Clarity lineup is growing as the Japanese automaker has announced plans to offer an electric and plug-in hybrid version of the fuel-cell vehicle.

Set to go on sale in the United States next year, the electric and plug-in hybrid variants will make the Clarity the first vehicle in the industry to offer electric, fuel-cell, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The Clarity Electric will go on sale first and Honda says it will be an affordable battery electric vehicle that boasts "premium content and features."

It will be followed by the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid which will be available in all 50 states later in 2017.  Honda expects this variant will be the most popular of the three and says the car will have an electric-only range in excess of 40 miles.

Additional information will be released closer to launch but both models will have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility as well as Honda Sensing driver assistance systems.

The two aforementioned models will follow the Clarity Fuel Cell which is slated to be launched in California later this year.  The model is expected to have a range in excess of 300 miles and a lease price of less than $500 a month.
