Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to introduce a China-only, long-wheelbase E-Class next week at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show.

Developed specifically for the Chinese market, the stretched midsize sedan will be built and sold locally in a country where rear legroom is very important for people shopping in the premium segment. Compared to the regular E-Class Sedan sold all over the world, the LWB model is going to be 5.5 inches (140 millimeters) longer which means it will have an overall length of 199.3 inches (5062 mm).

With these stretched sedans, in most cases all the extra length goes into the wheelbase to ensure that additional legroom for rear passengers. What this means is we should expect the stretched E-Class to have a wheelbase measuring 120.8 inches (3068 mm), up from the regular model’s 115.3 inches (2939 mm).

There will be more to this car than just a stretched wheelbase, as Mercedes-Benz says rear passengers will benefit from more luxurious seats featuring extra comfort functions. In addition, the interior cabin has gone through some changes to better suit the Chinese market and will feature higher-end materials.

The E-Class LWB will be introduced on Monday at Mercedes-Benz’s conference at the Beijing Motor Show where the GLC Coupe and C63 Coupe will also celebrate their Asian debut. The company with the three-pointed star logo will also have on display the SLK-replacing SLC and several Smarts upgraded by Brabus.

Although the E-Class LWB is not destined to be sold outside China, at one point there might be a stretched E for other countries. We are talking about a posh version labeled as a Mercedes-Maybach with individual rear seats, more lavish interior, extra goodies, and other similar refinements. Our spies have caught on camera several times prototypes with a longer wheelbase testing in Europe. We’re not sure if those where the E-Class LWB or the Mercedes-Maybach E-Class. Only time will tell if Daimler has plans to sell a stretched E outside China.
