One of the most successful rally cars of its generation makes the perfect treat for one driver.

Meet Cristophe and his beautiful Renault 5 Turbo from 1984 that were featured in the latest Petrolicious video.

It was 1980 when Renault launched the R5 Turbo during the Brussels Motor Show and production started shortly after. The French company assembled a total of 3576 R5 Turbos, equipped with a mid-mounted 1.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 160 horsepower (118 kilowatts) and 163 pound-feet (221 newton meters) of torque.

What we’ve got here is a red R5 Turbo in perfect condition that belongs to Christophe Guerin, a 46-year old French car enthusiast. As he explains, love for cars was a natural thing in the region he was born.

“I was born in Le Mans, 15 minutes away from the legendary circuit of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” he says. “My father worked at the Renault factory in Le Mans, and he was a handyman, so he gave me his passion for mechanics and repairs.”

In 1980 he had the chance to drive a brand new R5 Turbo “and it was such a thrill that I got hooked.” After years of studies in a technical college, he finally asked a friend to find him a good example of the pocket rocket to buy. “I need one,” Christophe says. “Find a pristine one for me, and make sure it’s red. When I saw it coming, it was… I almost dropped to my knees. That sound—you can’t forget it.”
