The wait is almost over as Mercedes-AMG has announced the hotter GT will be introduced this summer.

The reveal was made by none other than Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers in an interview with Car & Driver at the ongoing Detroit Auto Show. Before you get your hopes up too high, Moers was quick to point out it won’t be a Black Series model or something along the lines of that. It will come with active aerodynamics that will provide “markedly improved performance.”

The model will likely be labeled “Mercedes-AMG GT R” and is expected to use an upgraded version of the biturbo 4.0-liter V8 with around 550 horsepower. It’s not known at this point whether a weight loss is on the agenda, but chances are the 800 engineers working at AMG have put the car on a strict weight watchers plan.

When asked about the prospects of electric propulsion, Moers said the work put into the SLS Electric Drive will not go to waste as it will be put to good use in the future. He is also fond of a mid-engined model, but it’s not on the agenda for the foreseeable future since Mercedes-AMG simply doesn’t have the manufacturing capacity to back it up.
