Our spies have sent us a fresh batch of images with the Abarth 124 Spider scheduled to arrive later this year.

If you consider the Fiat 124 Spider a little bit too girly, Abarth’s version should prove to be more masculine once the camouflage will come off in the near future. The orange side markers of this car denote we are dealing with a US prototype and if you pay close attention you’ll notice there are some wires sticking out from under the car. It doesn’t have all the production bits and pieces, but it does come with a meaner exhaust packing four tailpipes.

Recent reports are indicating it will use a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine set to be offered in three states of tune: 160, 190, 200+ horsepower. Judging by the exhaust, the Abarth 124 Spider could actually come with the larger 1.75-liter from the Alfa Romeo 4C. If that will be the case, the high-performance roadster should pack some serious punch under the hood. It might not get all of the 4C’s 237 hp, but a detuned version should still deliver over 200 hp.

Regardless of powertrain, the Abarth 124 Spider is said to get an optional matte black finish for the hood as a throwback to the 1970s Abarth-tuned 124 Stradale homologation car. There could also be a hardtop model that is believed to spawn a WRC version.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer to find out what Abarth is planning to do with the Mazda MX-5-based Fiat 124 Spider. After the hot 124, Abarth will introduce in 2017 a beefier version of the 500X petite crossover.
